Below the fortress of Ostrožac there was an opened settlement of traders and
craftsman, what was giving great wages in cash to its masters. That means that Babo-
nićs gave privileges to inhabitants of Ostrožac. So, in the beginning of the 15
th
century
on the head of Ostrožac municipality was the judge helped by Cauncil. Beside that this
municipality had its own clerk and seal.
Position of this town got its real importance in the time of wars between King Si-
gsmund and Bosnians and followers of Ladislav Napuljski in Croatia. The fortress had
been taken from Babonićs and after that King’s soldiers settled in it. Similar situation
happened in the second half of the 16
th
century after appearance of the danger by Otto-
mans'. The town was still in property of the Dukes Babonićs of Blagaj, but protected by
40 King’s soldiers. The way Ostrožac was placed was of a great strategic importance for
safety of Bihać, Cazin and Stijena area. For that reason in 1563 commission proposed
to Habsburg Czar Ferdinand fixing this town and setting the crew of a 100 soldiers.
