Introductory remarks
Historical recollection is one of the factors of human identity. This recollection
helps us to recognize differences among us, but also things that we have in common.
In it we recognize significant historical events, from contradictory to common ini-
tiatives. Indeed, cultural identity defines each person and it separates him from the
others. Culture is an intersection where one can find material and unmaterial heritage
as well as artistic creations.
This intersection leads us via different roads to culture, based on permanent
tension between traditional and modern. And that is history which enables us to
discover where we come from and defines our origin. However, speaking of material
heritage, not too many things serve as testimony of our past as the old towns do.
Their walls, which are more or less preserved, were the product of a complex way of
organized work within the whole community. There are no other buildings in this
area having construction that demanded higher degree of organization, more human
labour and bigger material investment. There is no cultural heritage in this area such
as the old towns that would enable us to suppose more complete and meticulous view
of historical mosaic of the Krajina region which has been on temptation of history
over ceturies. This dramatic past of continuous historical events and turmoil are, in
fact, best illustrated and explained by the old towns.
In the area of the Una-Sana Canton the following old towns have been proved to
exist: Bihać, Bijela Stijena, Blažuj, Bjelaj, Bosanski Petrovac, Bosanska Krupa, Breko-
