During the time period that covers more than a century, the ancient cities of
Bosnia and Herzegovina was a subject of writers’ interest, travelers and certainly, of
researchers, archaeologists, historians and others.
Continuity in the research of this topic is as old as interest in it. Already at
the beginning of the last century (1904.), a manuscript of Dr. Ćiro Truhelk find
studious “description of the most beautiful middle-aged citizens of Bosnia and
Herzegovina.” The manuscript included 22 cities with the review of historical
data, layout, photographs and reconstructions of individual buildings or their
parts.
During the 80-ies of the century, academician Husref Redžić undertook a
study of the architectural remains of Bosnian medieval fortification architectu-
re along with detailed analysis of 147 cities. However, the results of years of rese-
arch published in 2009. in his book
Medieval cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina
.
The authors found that the old cities emerged on the ruins of earlier existence, and
that a large number of it, held its position during the Ottoman period. Only a few of
the old town, had the same function and during Austro-Hungarian rule.
In a recently published monograph
Old town of Bosnia and Herzegovina
(2012)
interdisciplinary team of experts presented the current knowledge about the deve-
lopment of the medieval city planning, archaeological research, and derived its present
condition.
The book

joins this valuable material in-
spired by the theme. Collected data during several years of research evidence about
the importance of old towns in relation of geographic and strategic position of the
region in which they are distributed, as well as the territories that are protected. By
studying historical sources and events, historical maps and archival materials, and
finally present situation, the authors have drawn up a comprehensive study of 37 in-
dividual cities of this region.
