T
he old town Sokol was built on a steep hill near ruins of an ancient city. It is
tightly built town whose defense depended on a high strong tower built up on
the most outstanding place in town, huge stone above Una River. In the sources Sokol
was mentioned for the first time in 1369, even chronicler Ivan Tomašević thinks it
was built in 1020. The town had its own castellan, crew and land for maintenance of
the crew. It was under the governor’s jurisdiction. The head of the crew was castellan.
In spite of the fact that Sokol was one of the most important fortresses in this
area, as Sigismund said, in the war time of the 15
th
century this town was pawned to-
gether with Bihać and Ripač because of insufficiency of money. In 1410 it was pawned
to Pavao Čupor and in 1431 to Nikola and Stjepan Frankopan. In the end of the 15
th
century it belonged to Croatian Governor Ivaniš Korvin and in the beginning of the
16
th
century its masters were Orlovićs and Kerečens. After 1527 Sokol was guarded by
King’s soldiers under command of Captain of Bihać. In 1563 it had a crew of 12 guards.
