T
he old town Ostrožac together with under-town is settled on the northeast of
Bihać. It was built in the first half of the 14
th
century on a place where before was
located an old village. The fact that Ostrožac was not placed near the main military
road that was connection between Pannonia and Adriatic Sea, was the reason why this
town developed in some other ways. The fortress was built on the private Babonićs
property, after Nikola and Dujam, sons of Radislav Babonić, bought private land from
noble Sunčans in 1321. The exact year of building is not known. By the sources some
castellan of Ostrožac was mentioned in 1336 what means that it existed even then. It
was a big impregnable town with a little colony settled in its protected inside area.
The main part of the fortress was placed on a steep stone on the west, just above Una
River. The town included tower with many bastions and long yard rounded with high
ramparts that had loopholes.
