T
he old town Ostrovica was built on Ostrovica hill, on the left bank of Una River,
above Kulen Vakuf.
Before Ottomans' period it was under command of Frankopans Juraj Mikulić
and Ivan Keglević.
Under the Ottomans' authority this town fell in 1523. It got its importance just after
the Karlovac Peace Treaty in 1699. By size Ostrovica was small but of a big importance,
because it was settled near Venetian and Austrian border and had favorable defending
conditions. Those were reasons for widening and strengthening of this town. Town
was rounded with strong ramparts, 10 meters in height, 117 meters in length and 83
meters in width. In a front of ramparts was a trench 5 meters wide and 3 meters deep.
On the south side of rampart were the main gates. The fortress included four towers
and two torches.
