Introduction
The special enviroment of Una-Sana Canton, except natural, contributes valuable
cultural heritage, which testifies to the continuity of life and the cultural identity of
the inhabitants of this area. When the analysis of cultural heritage were done in time's
periods, then it can be seen the following characteristics:
•• First, this heritage was established in the cultures whose boundaries are generally
covered the greater area than that bounded by the limits of today's cantons.
•• The second characteristic is that the cultural heritage of the Una-Sana Canton
represented a complex, special and unique, because of the sequence of cultures,
their parallel coexistence and constant interaction.
•• The third characteristic is that the Government of the Una-Sana Canton, in the
mid-2004. were recognized the value and opportunities of cultural heritage
and made a decision on the formation of the Institute for Protection of Cultural
Heritage.
With the formation of the Institute for Protection of Cultural Heritage of US-Canton
(which is officially registered at the end of February 2005.), it was initiated many activi-
ties for the protection and valorization of cultural goods. Actually, that started with a
number of projects in the "Program of revitalize the cultural heritage of the Una-Sana
Canton". This was indicated, after a certain time, to leave a passive protection of cultural
heritage, what was done in the world, and to pass on the active institutional care of the
cultural heritage and its incorporation into development projects.
A lot of projects since then until today, the Institute has pointed to the need for
evaluation, protection, revitalization and affirmation of our valuable cultural heritage,
but also to the aspect of its economic benefits. It was confirmed that the cultural and
natural heritage is one of the most important resources for sustainable development
of the region. It was finally overcome the view that the integration of cultural heritage
in economic development, particularly significant and important factor in the tourist
development of the Canton.
