y the historical sources, this town was mentioned for the first time in 1330 as royal
town. It was built out of rocks on a steep hill above the left bank of Una River. The
fortress had big protected yard rounded with defending walls and tower. Since 1436 it
came under protection of Babonićs of Blagaj. At the end of the 15
th
century Brekovica
belonged to the noble Kobasić family. In the second half of the 16
th
century it became
a part of Captaincy of Bihać. In 1563 there were 10 King’s soldiers guarding it.
It fell under the Ottomans' authority in 1584, but preliminary it was destroyed by
Habsburg authorities. In the first half of the 17
th
century Ottomans' rebuilt it. Accor-
ding to the list from 1643 there were 40 border guards. In the first half of 18
th
century
the fortress was supplied with one bigger and two smaller cannons and with crew of
60 border guards. It was a part of Bihać Captaincy. On a steep hill above the left bank
of Una River nowadays it can be seen the remainders of the old town Brekovica.
