y the written sources this town was mentioned for the first time in 1495. High
rounded tower and town yard with cistern were surrounded with strong ramparts
and they together create the old heart of the town. It fell under the Ottomans' authority
in the beginning of the 3
rd
decade of the 16
th
century. In that Ottomans' period there
was a permanent crew under command of this town. Half of century later (1577) there
was a crew made of 370 men. In 1592 town became a part of Captaincy of Bihać and
in the 18
th
century part of Captaincy of Petrovac. In the first half of the 18
th
century
in the Fortress of Bjelaj were stationed two bigger and three smaller cannons and the
crew of 100 men.
