treats the development of fortified cities and urban center of the medieval Bosnian
state, gives evidence and archaeological excavations of ancient towns, protection and
conservation of old cities, towns fortified settlements and catalogue examination of
old cities. Among 14 authors of this book, members of ICOMOS, there is an employee
of our Institute in Bihac treating 11 selected old towns and 58 of the Ancients sites in
the Una-Sana Canton of about 300 in BiH.
For this kind of literature there is an evident and emphasized interest od domestic
and foreign public, which is why the director of the Institute, in cooperation with the
Federal Ministry of Culture, created a new edition of the book “Old Una-Sana Canton.”
The book presents pinpointed the old cities whose development and cultural interac-
tion, especially accompanied by the second half of the 13th century up to 1878., the
period of Austro-Hungarian rule in Bosnia, including the intervention in one part of
this valuable historical buildings that has recently exercised Institute for Protection
of Cultural Heritage in Bihac.
At the same time, it is worth noticeing that the initial work of employees of the
Institute, Commissionfor Preserve National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina
adopted the Decisions and declared 50 properties of cultural heritage as a national mo-
numents in the area of the Una-Sana Canton, while the another Decision is waiting for
another 30 of the provisional list. Legal protections include the following: Architectural
cultural heritage (historical entity, Archaeological Topography - archaeological sites and
archaeological zones, cultural landscapes), Intangible cultural heritage (folklore and
toponym), and Movable heritage (individual monuments and collections).
The decision-making process of the Commission to Preserve National Monuments
means the exploration and evaluation of the property and premises on which it is loca-
ted, extensive historical writing, photo, maps and other documents, documentation of
interventions on the subject property and analysis of current status of treated goods of
cultural heritage. That is a goods of cultural heritage, while the maintenance and resto-
ration of cultural heritage assets dependend on the availability of financial resources,
as well as investors knowledge, that this is a neglected area and objects of great value,
and the awareness that they are irreplaceable spatial marks and symbols of our identity,
specific cultural brand, and development opportunity especially of cultural tourism.
On this basis, one of the goals of this book is to point a multiple benefits in main-
tenance, conservation and restoration of architectural cultural heritage of Una-Sana
Canton, as part of a network of cultural routes in Europe.
