O
n the place where Stari Majdan (Old Mine) was built in Ottomans' period, before
Ottomans' authority there was a mine of iron ore with forge and mint. Ottomans'
restored the process of iron production in 1571. It was used mostly for cannonballs
and rifle barrels. The town was built in the middle of the 18
th
century and it becomes
the seat of Captaincy and Quadi District of Kamengrad. In the first half of the 18
th
century the town had two bigger and three smaller cannons and a crew of 300 bor-
der guards. Until the third decade of the 19
th
century fortress of Stari Majdan had a
permanent crew.
