P
ećigrad was built in 1470 by Governor Ivan Tuz. His sons sold this town to Šubićs
of Peran and those gave it to Jurčec Gusić in 1519. After Gusić’s death Ottomans'
captured his only son and his widow adopted Castellan of Krupa, Mihajl Turk in 1520.
This town got name Peći (Stoves) of Mihajl Turk. 12 King’s guards protected it. About 10
years later the crew increased to 16 guards and in 1577 they left town on their own will.
This area was deserted and uninhabited until 1635. Then small Ottomans' crew of
23 border guards settled in it. The crew was under command of Captain of Ostrožac.
By the first half of the 18
th
century, according to its importance and weapon quantity,
Pećigrad became one of the most important fortresses in Krajina: it had two bigger
and four smaller cannons and the crew of 250 men. In 1786, by order of Bosnian Vali
Muhsinović, next to the town Peći Captain of Ostrožac had built new town. Some
parts can be seen even today.
